I agree with Mr Armeneau's article. My boyfriend and I arrived in Alberta just last Saturday, and are both from Nova Scotia. My boyfriend responded to only one job ad and was offered a job and began working just 3 days after arriving. I have only applied to 3 jobs, and have had 2 call backs. I have been offered one job, and am going to an interview for another job this week, when I'll decide which job I prefer. We both have some university education, but neither of us have finished our degrees, and both of us only have summer working experience. With a help wanted sign in almost every business' window, I find it hard to believe that people are having so much trouble finding jobs.
Sadly I can't agree with you, I have been in Calgary for a month. I have an apartment, and all that because I have hounded the city for one, with my boyfriend who is from here. Whenever he applies to jobs he gets a call back within two days, whereas when I apply to places, with a University Degree and job experience under MY belt I don't hear back from anywhere. I think that it's an eye opener to be sure, since I do not want a retail job but one in the office. I do not want to have to resort to a retail job, but unfortunately, I may have to. Argh
Anonymous, you have proven my point you are from the the area that the businesses are discriminately hiring, people from NF and NS. It has been 2 years and both my wife and I have not recieved one interview. I tried a little test and changed my resume to reflect that I was from NF and would you believe I had a call from Syncrude and Suncor in one week, so I admitted to the recruiters that I had a little mistake on my resume that I was actually from Ontario and they said they would call me back to arrange an interview, well no calls.
It is hard to believe but it is sadly true.
We will be going back to Ontario real soon as we are running our life savings dry.
A sad situation!!!!
